Most of Acadiana is built on a slab, which means a leaking supply line is under several inches of concrete and gives you almost nothing to go on. The usual first sign is not water at all: it is a bill that climbed for no reason, a warm patch on the floor, a meter dial that keeps turning after every tap in the house is shut, or a hiss under the tile at night. The job is to find the leak before anything gets opened up, because guessing at the location is what turns a small repair into a large one. That means isolating the line, watching the meter, and narrowing the run down to a point rather than a room. Once it is located there is usually a choice, and you should hear both sides of it: break through the slab at that one spot and repair the line, or abandon the failed section and re-route the run overhead where it can be reached again later. Which one is cheaper depends on how deep it sits, what the line is made of, and whether the rest of the pipe is likely to follow it.
